Harvest is On!

With a heat wave leading to a cooler period the 2008 harvest is coming in very smoothly up in Mendocino. We’ve already brought in our Fairbairn Ranch Syrah along with Chardonnay for our Ukiah Cellars label. Looking forward to some very concentrated and well balanced wines in the months ahead. Stay tuned for more updates from the vineyards!

Lots of activity underway over at Ft. Mason. Cases are being unloaded, tables set up, banners unfurled. Slow Food Nation opens this Saturday and we will be there pouring our wines at the Biodynamic Trade Association table and in the Enoteca. Steve Ryan will be on duty Saturday evening (5:40pm) giving a seminar on Terroir and Wine Quality. Josh Metz will be talking later (7:40pm) on the differences between Organic and Biodyanmic farming. Come on by to taste and learn. Go Slow!

Is Mendocino the New Napa?

Todays front page article in the Press Democrat describes research findings from Greg Jones at Southern Oregon State University along with anecdotal evidence from winegrowers in inland Mendocino that seasonal temperature patterns are shifting to favor high quality winegrowing. I thought the article was interesting because it draws on both academic research and observations from long time growers like Charlie Barra. Of course we like the idea of Mendocino begining to get it’s due respect in the winegrowing world as well :-)
